See the resemblance?

Yesterday, the Devoted Classicist pointed out that the parti, or big idea for the house, of the HOTW is similar to the Neel Reid Adair house. Since I have photos of the Adair house I thought it would be fun to show you the two houses together. The massings are a lot alike and the interesting dormers are a prominent feature on both houses also. Devoted Classicist, anything to add? Hat tip to you for letting us know the similarities!

  1. Putting the front door to the side allows for a wonderful, big Living Room, one of my favorite things if it is actually used. It is interesting -- and fitting -- that the newer house has a porch or garden room, too, just like the earlier house. I am always amazed at the number of new houses that use historic elements without understanding how to put them together, but this house understands the value of observing the earlier successes in the building tradition. Kudos to you, Helen, for this most excellent post and for using your blog so brilliantly.
